How to Get Web Design Clients: the SEO You Can Build

The query you typed to land here returns 218 monthly US searches in Ahrefs, checked on 2026-10-22, at a keyword difficulty of 0.
The same check, same day, on twelve queries your clients type: 47,194 monthly searches between them. One of them, "website designer near me", is worth 7,961 on its own.
Both sets of numbers are real. The difference is not competition and it is not budget. It is that the easy query has no buyers on it, and the pages ranking for it are written for you, not for the person who signs your contract.
You are also the rare reader of this query who can ship every technical fix in this article yourself. You already write HTML, you already deploy sites, you already have the admin login. So this is not an article about hiring an SEO. It is about which pages to build, which query belongs on each one, which of the attractive numbers are traps, and where in Search Console you check whether any of it landed.
The two sides of the gap, measured the same day
Everything below comes from one Ahrefs pull on 2026-10-22, country US. Your side of the gap first.
| query | volume | KD | traffic potential |
|---|---|---|---|
| how to get web design clients | 218 | 0 | 800 |

| where to find web design clients | 24 | 0 | 700 |
Ten of those eleven share one parent topic, how to get web design clients, which is Ahrefs saying Google treats them as one search result page. They add up to 764 searches a month. One article can hold all of them, and this is that article.
Now the other side, the queries a person types when they have decided to pay someone.
| query | volume | KD | parent topic |
|---|---|---|---|
| web design services | 17,487 | 1 | web design company in los angeles |
| website designer near me | 7,961 | 61 | website designer near me |

| how much does a website cost for a small business | 66 | 5 | how much does it cost to run a website |
47,194 searches against 764. Sixty-one times, and the ratio is not the useful part. The useful part is the difficulty column: the demand sits at KD 21, 31, 36, 44 and 61 where it is genuinely crowded, and at KD 0, 1, 7, 9 and 12 where something else is going on. Four of those five low numbers are traps, and the fifth is the page you should build this month. The next two sections separate them.
This pattern is not specific to web design. We measured the same shape writing about how interior designers get clients: the practitioner query and the client query differ by two orders of magnitude, and almost everyone publishing optimises for the practitioner one.
What ranks for this query, and the one page that gets it right
The search result page for how to get web design clients, pulled the same day:
| pos | result | DR | est. traffic |

Domain Rating does not order that page. DR 73 sits at position nine with 18 estimated monthly visits, DR 38 sits at six with 57, and the most-read independent page on the whole result set is a DR 53. If you have been told your new studio site cannot compete, that column is the counter-argument.
Read the content and the pattern is sharper. Position four is roughly 1,400 words and recommends emailing friends and family, with a script. It never says SEO, keyword, Search Console or organic search. Position six lists fourteen tactics and spends one line of one tactic on using a long-tail keyword in a blog post.
Position seven is the honest one, and it deserves saying plainly before anything else: alanajadestudio argues that search is the channel that worked, tells you to open Search Console, tells you to find the words your clients type, and tells you to write for those words instead of posting on social media. That thesis is correct, and it is the same one this article defends.
What it does not do is hand over the method. The keyword step is described as "a pretty simple method" and the detail lives in a paid collection. The traffic graph is self-reported and the underlying numbers are not on the page, so a reader cannot check the claim.
So the gap in this search result is narrow and specific. One page in ten says search is the answer and withholds the numbers. Nobody shows the queries, the difficulty, the parent topics, or which of the attractive numbers are lies. That is what the rest of this is.
Four of those buyer numbers are traps, and the parent column says so
A low difficulty score on a high-volume query is a reason to look harder, not to start writing. Here is what the same Ahrefs pull says about the four cheapest-looking rows above.
web design services, 17,487 searches at KD 1. The parent topic is web design company in los angeles. Google has resolved this phrase into city-level result pages, so the ranking is decided per metro area. A national "Web Design Services" page is competing with every local agency page in the country at once, and the KD 1 describes none of those fights.
web design near me, 3,710 searches at KD 12 with a traffic potential of 29,000. The parent is marketing agency near me. That traffic potential belongs to the parent, not to this query. We have been caught by this exact column before, which is why we now read it first: a child query inherits the parent's number on the screen and not one click of it in reality.
shopify web designer, 731 searches at KD 7 with a traffic potential of 13,000. Parent topic shopify expert. Same mechanism. The 13,000 is what the page ranking for shopify expert earns across everything it ranks for, and that page is a marketplace listing, not a studio.
website redesign, 3,566 searches at KD 9, parent topic itself. This one looks clean on every column, which is why it is the instructive failure. We bought the search result page for it, and there is not one designer service page in the top ten.

Two AI redesign tools, two guides from design platforms, two portfolio tag pages, one Reddit thread about doing it with AI. The People Also Ask block asks "How much should a website redesign cost?" and "Can AI redesign my existing website?".
So the person typing website redesign is researching a process or shopping for a tool. They are not looking for you. Build a "Website Redesign" service page expecting that 3,566 and you will rank, eventually, in a room full of guides, for readers who were never going to hire anybody.
This is the whole audience check in one query, and it is the check that costs the most to skip: difficulty said yes, volume said yes, the parent topic said yes, and only the actual result page said no.
The query that is open: platform plus the verb
squarespace designer returns 472 monthly US searches at difficulty 0, with a cost per click of $9.00. Its parent topic is hire squarespace designers.
That parent is the whole argument. Ahrefs is reporting that Google groups the bare phrase with the version that contains the verb "hire", which means the dominant intent behind those 472 searches is purchase, not research. Difficulty 0 on a purchase query is rare, and nine dollars a click is advertisers agreeing with the assessment.
The honest limit: its traffic potential is 30. A page built for squarespace designer lives on its own query and borrows nothing. That is fine for a service page, and it is the reason this is not a blog post but a page in your main navigation.
The pattern generalises past Squarespace. Platform plus role is how a buyer who already owns a site searches, because they know what they are on before they know who they want:
shopify web designer, 731 at KD 7, discounting the parent's traffic potentialwordpress developer near me, 785, though at KD 44 the local pack decides it- platform plus role plus industry, which is where the volumes fall below the floor and the competition disappears entirely
If you specialise, say so in the URL and the title tag, not only in the body copy. A studio page titled "Squarespace designer for small law firms" answers a query that the generic "Web Design Services" page cannot, and it does it without competing against Los Angeles. If you are weighing which platform to specialise in, our Webflow versus WordPress SEO comparison covers what each one does and does not let you control, and Shopify's URL structure matters if you take ecommerce work.
Your Business Profile, and whether you qualify for one
Every guide in that top ten that mentions local search says to set up a Google Business Profile. None of them mentions the eligibility rule, and for a remote web designer the rule is the first question.
Google's own eligibility page says a business qualifies if it "has a physical location that customers can visit, or travels to customers where they are". For a business without a storefront, it allows "one service-area Business Profile" where the business "travels to customers at their physical locations", and it adds that "If you're a service-area business, you should hide your business address from customers".
It also closes the obvious workaround: if you rent a mailing address but do not operate there, "that location isn't eligible for a Business Profile".
Read together, a designer who meets clients at their offices has a service-area profile available. A designer who has never met a client in person does not qualify on the terms of that page, and the "near me" queries at 7,961 and 3,931 are largely decided inside the local pack that a profile feeds.
If you do qualify, Google's local ranking page names three factors and defines them: relevance is "how well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching for", distance is "how far each business is from the customer who's searching", and prominence "means how well-known a business is". The same page states there is "no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google", and that "Businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up in local search results".
Distance is the one you cannot touch, which is why a remote studio should not spend months on "near me" and should spend them on platform plus role instead. We go through the fields that matter in Google Business Profile optimization, and prominence is where asking clients for Google reviews earns its place.
The footer credit link on every site you have ever built
This is the one asset a web designer has that nobody else on this query has: a "Site by Studio" link in the footer of forty live websites. It is also the single clause of Google's spam policies you are most likely to be sitting on top of.
Google's spam policies page, last updated 2026-08-28, defines link spam as "the practice of creating links to or from a site primarily for the purpose of manipulating search rankings". Its list of examples includes, verbatim, "Widely distributed links in the footers or templates of various sites" and "Keyword-rich, hidden, or low-quality links embedded in widgets that are distributed across various sites". The same list names "Exchanging goods or services for links".
A credit link repeated in the footer of every site you build is, structurally, that first bullet. If the anchor text reads "Austin web design" rather than your studio name, it is the second one too. If you offered a client a discount in exchange for keeping it, it is the third.
Attribution itself is legitimate and worth keeping. What the policy objects to is a link whose purpose is ranking. So the fix is to make the purpose visible in the markup:
<!-- the pattern the policy describes -->
<a href="https://yourstudio.com">Austin web design by Your Studio</a>
<!-- attribution, with the ranking intent removed -->
<a href="https://yourstudio.com" rel="nofollow">Site by Your Studio</a>
The policy accepts rel="nofollow" and rel="sponsored" for links that should not pass ranking signals, which is exactly the declaration you want here. You keep the credit, the referral clicks and the client's goodwill. You stop running a template link network across your entire portfolio.
Audit what you have shipped with one request per site, or with your CMS's search if you own the template:
for url in $(cat client-sites.txt); do
echo -n "$url "
curl -s "$url" | grep -oE '<a[^>]+yourstudio\.com[^>]*>[^<]*</a>' | head -1
done
Referral traffic from those links is real and worth measuring. Ranking value from them is not something to build a plan on, and under the current policy text it is a liability rather than an asset.
The schema type for a web designer does not exist
Half the local SEO advice online tells you to mark up your site as ProfessionalService. Checked on schema.org on 2026-10-22, that page carries this note: "The general ProfessionalService type for local businesses was deprecated due to confusion with Service."
There is no WebDesign type either. Schema.org has specific local business subtypes for dentists, attorneys, plumbers and electricians, and nothing for a design studio.
Google's local business structured data documentation, last updated 2026-09-08, tells you to "Use the most specific LocalBusiness sub-type possible" and lists exactly two required properties: name and address.
That requirement collides with the section above. If you are a service-area business and Google tells you to hide your address, you cannot satisfy the required property honestly, and inventing one is worse than omitting the markup. So there are two defensible choices and one bad one.
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "LocalBusiness",
"name": "Your Studio",
"url": "https://yourstudio.com",
"telephone": "+1-512-555-0142",
"address": {
"@type": "PostalAddress",
"streetAddress": "411 Brazos St",
"addressLocality": "Austin",
"addressRegion": "TX",
"postalCode": "78701",
"addressCountry": "US"
}
}
Use that when you have an address you are willing to publish. When you do not, drop to Organization and skip the address entirely rather than marking up a virtual office you do not work from. Either way, the same Google page warns that "Google does not guarantee that features that consume structured data will show up in search results", so treat this as removing ambiguity about who you are, not as a lever.
One more reason to care about the type you pick: we have a published article in this blog recommending a schema type that returns 404, and it has been on our correction list for weeks. Copying a type name from a blog post without opening schema.org is how that happens. If you work in Next.js, the metadata and JSON-LD patterns are the right place to put this so it renders server-side.
The portfolio pages Google crawled and left out
A case study page with three screenshots, a client name and eighty words of copy is the most common page in web design, and it is the archetype of what Google declines to index.
The Page indexing report has two statuses worth knowing by name. "Discovered - currently not indexed" means "The page was found by Google, but not crawled yet". "Crawled - currently not indexed" means "The page was crawled by Google but not indexed", and the documentation adds that "It may or may not be indexed in the future; no need to resubmit this URL for crawling".
The same documentation states the thing most tool vendors avoid saying: "Google doesn't guarantee that all pages everywhere will make it into the Google index."
For a designer there is a second failure mode that is yours alone. You may have shipped your portfolio as a client-rendered app, in which case the text Google needs may not be in the HTML response at all. That takes one command to check:
# does the response body actually contain the client name and the copy?
curl -s https://yourstudio.com/work/acme-dental | grep -c "Acme Dental"
# how many URLs are you even declaring?
curl -s https://yourstudio.com/sitemap.xml | grep -oE '<loc>[^<]+' | wc -l
A zero on the first command is not a ranking problem, it is an indexing problem, and no amount of keyword work survives it. A sitemap declaring six URLs explains the whole situation by itself: six pages cannot answer twelve different buyer queries. We go through the rest of that diagnosis in why your website is not showing up on Google.
The fix for case studies is not more screenshots. Write the problem, the constraint, the decision and the measured outcome, and name the platform and the industry in the title. "Shopify replatform for a 400-product coffee roaster" is a page that can rank for something. "Acme Dental" cannot.
What to publish, in order of distance from a signed contract
Order matters more than volume here, because the first three items answer queries from people who are already buying.
- A service page per platform you specialise in. Title, URL and first paragraph all name the platform plus the role. This is the
squarespace designerandshopify web designerfamily. - A pricing page that names numbers.
website design costis 1,381 a month at KD 30 andhow much does a website cost for a small businessis 66 at KD 5. The cheap version of that query is specific, which is the point. - A profile, if you qualify. Complete fields, real service area, no invented address.
- One case study per platform and industry pair you want more of, written as a decision record rather than a gallery.
- The answer pages your clients search before they shop, which are the ones that take months and compound. A small business owner asking whether they need a redesign at all is upstream of the hiring query.
Nothing in that list depends on publishing daily, and plenty of it is a weekend of work on pages you already own. Doing your own SEO as a small business is the longer version of this argument, and if you are weighing the channel against your current pipeline, getting clients as a freelancer sets it next to the others.
Where you check whether any of it landed
Search Console is the only free source of the queries you actually appeared for. Google describes it as "a tool from Google that can help anyone with a website to understand how they are performing on Google Search", and the performance report "shows how much traffic you're getting from Google Search, including breakdowns by queries, pages, and countries".
Three readings, in the order they tell you something:
- Impressions with no clicks means you are ranking and your title is losing the click. The fix is the title tag, not the article.
- No impressions at all means the page is not in the index or not relevant to any query. Go back to the two curl commands above.
- Impressions on the wrong query means you built the page the SERP wanted, not the one you intended. That is the
website redesigntrap arriving in your own data.
A live example, from our own property on 2026-10-22, 28-day window: /blog/seo-for-auto-repair-shops has 81 impressions and 0 clicks, /blog/seo-for-interior-designers has 67 and 0, and /blog/how-to-get-photography-clients has 60 and 0. Three pages ranking well enough to be seen and badly titled enough that nobody clicks. We publish that rather than a case study with a rising arrow in it, because the first reading in that list is the one we are currently failing.
Expect the honest timeline to be measured in months, not weeks. We put numbers on that in how long SEO takes, and the answer is uncomfortable for anybody who needs a client this quarter.
When the client asks an assistant instead of Google
A growing share of "who should build my website" starts in ChatGPT or Perplexity rather than a search box, and the AI Overview on both result pages we pulled today shows Google doing the summarising itself. On how to get web design clients, the Overview cites two blogs and seven YouTube videos.
Assistants cite pages that state facts plainly and attribute them. For a studio, that means publishing the things you know that are checkable: what a platform migration costs, what a redesign includes, how long a project runs. A portfolio of images gives an assistant nothing to quote. We covered what we have measured about this in getting cited by ChatGPT.
What this does not promise
Nothing above is a ranking plan with an outcome attached. Google's own page on hiring an SEO is blunt about it: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google", and "If they guarantee you that their changes will give you first place in search results, find someone else". The questions it tells you to ask a provider are worth asking yourself about your own pages: "What kind of results do you expect to see, and in what timeframe? How do you measure your success?"
Disclosure, because Google's helpful content guidance asks for it and because asking you to demand it would be hollow otherwise. This article is published by syted. It was researched and written by an automated pipeline, with the keyword data bought from Ahrefs on the date given above and every quoted guideline read from its source page the same day. It passed a validator that rejects drafts rather than publishing them. Google's guidance asks whether "the use of automation, including AI-generation, self-evident to visitors through disclosures or in other ways" and whether you are "explaining why automation or AI was seen as useful to produce content", so: it is useful here because measuring twenty-four queries and six documentation pages in a morning is the part a person skips.
The same guidance warns against content made "primarily to attract search engine visits". The test is whether the page would be worth reading if nobody searched for it, and the four trap queries in the middle of this one are our answer.
FAQ
Is web design still in demand in 2026?
Search demand says yes, and it says where. Measured in Ahrefs on 2026-10-22 for the US: website designer near me 7,961 a month, web design services 17,487, small business website design 4,882, website redesign 3,566. That is tens of thousands of monthly searches from people describing a purchase. What has changed is that two of the ten results for website redesign are AI redesign tools, so the generic "we make websites" positioning now competes with software. The platform-plus-industry specialisations are where the queries have no software answer.
How do I find clients that need a website?
Reverse the search. Instead of looking for businesses with bad websites, look for the queries a business runs right before it commissions one, and own a page for each. how much does a website cost for a small business is 66 searches a month at difficulty 5, and the person typing it has a budget conversation happening. A page that answers it with real numbers reaches them earlier than any outreach list, and it keeps working after you stop sending emails.
How do I get customers for my own website?
The same way you would for a client's: decide which query each page owns, make sure the page is in the index, then read Search Console for impressions and clicks. The difference is that most designer sites have five pages and twelve buyer queries, so the work is adding pages rather than tuning the ones you have. Start with one service page per platform you want more work on.
What is the fastest way to get clients?
Honestly, not this channel. Referrals and direct outreach close faster, and the pages in the top ten for this query that recommend emailing everyone you know are not wrong about speed. Search is the channel that still produces leads in month nine without you sending anything, which is a different promise. Nobody can guarantee a position or a date, and any timeline you are quoted for search results is a guess.
How do I get local web design clients specifically?
Two surfaces, in this order. A Google Business Profile if you qualify under the eligibility rules above, because distance is one of the three factors Google names for local ranking and a profile is how you enter that pack at all. Then city pages only where you can write something true per city, since web design services resolves to a parent topic of web design company in los angeles and those result pages are decided metro by metro. A page for a city you have never worked in is a page with nothing to say.
How do I get higher paying web design clients?
Change the query, not the pitch. how to get high paying web design clients is 50 searches a month of designers reading about it; the leverage is on the other side, where platform plus industry queries select for budget on their own. A business searching shopify web designer for a 400-product catalogue has a different budget than one searching cheap website, and the page title is what sorts them before the first call. Architects are a close parallel: the specialised query converts at a rate the generic one does not.
